Academics

We know that in order for our vision–of all scholars inspiring towards and working for a college degree–to become a reality, scholars must get a strong educational foundation starting as soon as they enter school. At the core of this foundation must be strong literacy knowledge and skills.

We select and implement curricula aligned to the Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards and use aligned rigorous assessments. We use assessments to track scholars’ growth and achievement, aiming for reading levels on or above grade level and dramatic reading growth for every child every year.

Our schedule allows more instructional time throughout the day and an opportunity for daily dedicated time for small group and individual supports at all grade levels. In addition, blending learning opportunities through computer-based programs at all grade levels ensure scholars have frequent opportunities to practice essential academic skills targeted to their growth needs.

Primary classrooms are self-contained with one homeroom teacher is responsible for instruction in all core subjects. Class size ranges from 23 – 25 scholars per class. In addition, one paraprofessional is dedicated to each grade for small group instruction during literacy rotations. Primary scholars take additional co-curricular classes including art, music, and physical education.

By the time our scholars leave Collegiate Primary at the end of second grade, they are fluent readers. Moreover, they are positioned for proficiency and growth in all academic areas and they have developed the character competencies and attributes that underpin school and life success.
